1. They can be crowded: Depending on when you travel, the most popular all inclusive resorts in Tulum can be crowded (or VERY crowded), which may take away from your peace and quiet.

2. You don’t get to know Mexico: Most would never describe staying at an all inclusive resort as “culture travel.” With everything you need there, you likely won’t go off-resort to explore the local culture, cuisine, and unique local sites.

3. Getting the full value: Unless you take full advantage of everything the resort offers, ie. food, drinks, activities and entertainment, it might feel like you didn’t get your money’s worth on your
all inclusive vacations in Tulum Mexico.

4. Limited dining: Not all of the all-inclusive resort dining options are created — and not all resorts have great food. If you’re a foodie, make sure to check reviews before booking.

What are the Types of Tulum All Inclusive Resorts?

Tulum has a variety of all inclusive resort styles for different types of vacationers. These include family-friendly resorts and adults-only resorts, and a small portion of couples-only resorts.

Whether you’re traveling with family, as a couple, or with a group of friends, Tulum offers a range of options to suit your preferences and make your stay enjoyable and memorable. Here are my picks for the best in each type:

  • Best Tulum All-Inclusive Resort for Couples & Adults: Secrets Tulum
  • Best Tulum All-Inclusive Resort for Families: Dreams Tulum

How much do Tulum resorts cost?

It varies — The general price range for Tulum all inclusive resorts at the lower price point will run about $500 per night.

However, they can go up to $10,000+ for luxury all-inclusive resorts in Tulum.

💎💎💎 Luxury Resorts

Looking for all inclusive resorts in Tulum Mexico with private pools? Opt for a suite at Grand Velas Luxury All Inclusive (Photo: Expedia, Tulum resorts all inclusive)

High-end resorts tend to range from about $800-$1,200 per night, per person for their standard hotel rooms.

However ultra-luxury properties, like Grand Velas Riviera Maya Luxury Resort, have suites that cost upwards of $10,000 USD per night.

Of course, this exceptional AAA 5 Diamond Resort boasts world-class facilities, gourmet dining, and outstanding customer service.

With stellar guest reviews, from families in Tulum for an all-inclusive experience to couples looking for an intimate vacation, it’s easy to see why this is one of the best all-inclusive resorts in Mexico.

It’s also one of the best all inclusive resorts in Tulum Mexico for weddings!

💎💎 Mid-Range Resorts

Anticipate spending between $500-$700 per night per person for midrange all-inclusive resorts in Tulum.

These resorts typically offer an array of amenities, improved dining options, and a heightened level of service.

💎 Budget Resorts

You can find budget-friendly Tulum all-inclusive resorts starting at approximately $400-500 per night per person.

While these options provide basic amenities and services, they are a more affordable choice.

5 Additional Price Factors to Consider (So you can keep costs down)

I’ve found great deals at the Hilton Tulum All-Inclusive Resort for families. (Photo: Expedia, Tulum hotels all inclusive)

📆 When are you traveling? Prices are typically highest during the Tulum busy season.

This runs from about November to March, coinciding with Christmas, New Year’s and Spring Break. During these months, you can expect the highest rates.

Of course, hotel prices are impossible to determine without checking up to date prices as average prices don’t account for sales, promotions and seasonality.

Make sure to compare options and room availability, and read reviews on Tulum Mexico all inclusive resorts before booking.

🏩 How long is your trip? Some resorts offer long-stay discounts when you stay 4-nights to a week. Often, you end up with a FREE night (or two) when you take advantage of these promotions.

🛌 What room type do you need? Oceanfront suites, swim-up rooms and multi-room villas will always cost A LOT more than garden view rooms.

If you don’t truly need an upgraded room with special amenities, reconsider it to save on the total cost.

🧳 Do you need that upgrade package? Tulum all-inclusive package perks can include fun activities, day trip excursions, spa treatments, jet ski rentals and top-shelf drinks — but they can also drive up your total cost.

💎 Are you resort brand specific? Many of the most popular resort brands, international companies and prominent hotel chains charge a premium because of their name and reputation.

You can get a lot of bang for your buck when you steer clear of the biggest names book at a lesser-known resort, like Unico 20°N 87°W Hotel Riviera Maya.

Set in the best location, I think this is one of the best adults-only resorts you’ve probably never heard of.

Opting for one of these places with great reviews and no brand recognition is one of the best ways to save.

Even without the brand-name recognition, most of the top Tulum all inclusive resorts Mexico include similar luxury amenities like an elaborate pool area with swim-up pool bar, several eateries and a Preferred Club.

What part of Tulum is best to stay in?

Tulum Beach — This is the most fun and romantic part of town, where you’ll find all the best hotels, the Tulum Mayan Ruins, the famous Tulum Instagram spots, and the best restaurants in town.

Wherever you decide to stay, you can bike around to see more of Tulum.

Of course, the “best place in Tulum to stay” depends on you, your budget and your travel style.

If you are looking for a quiet escape, look for a hotel in the North Beach Zone closer to Tankah Bay, or the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve.

However, if you want to be close to all the restaurants and nightlife, you should book one of the hotels in Downtown Tulum or the beach hotels South Beach Zone.

Is it better to stay at the beach or town in Tulum?

Tulum Beach — Tulum is a beach town, and of course, most travelers want to spend their time lounging around on the beach.

Since Tulum taxi prices from downtown to the beach can add up quickly, it makes sense to stay on the beach.

What are the best places to stay in Tulum Mexico?

Tulum Beach and Downtown Tulum — While most travelers will want to stay on Tulum Beach, it’s not always economical.

If you’re doing Tulum budget travel, opt for Tulum Town (AKA downtown).

1. Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone on Tulum Beach)

If you want to stay in the heart of all the action, Tulum’s Hotel Zone on Tulum Beach is the place.

It’s the busiest section of town, with tons of restaurants, beach clubs, yoga studios, Mayan spas, boutique shopping, fine dining and the best nightlife in Tulum.

Accommodation options range from luxurious resorts to private villas, perfect for those looking to indulge in a high-end, 5 Star luxury in Tulum.

This is the most popular part of town for tourists, as Tulum Beach is walkable and convenient, with tons of amenities. The area is divided into these three different sections:

  • North Beach: Located near the Tulum Mayan Ruins, this is a quiet, romantic area.
  • Mid Beach or Middle Beach: Is chic and has the best beach clubs in Tulum, some of the best restaurants in Tulum (including the famed Arca Tulum), and best nightlife in town.
  • South Beach Tulum, Esmeralda K and Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve: This area is quiet, and the perfect place for families or couples, with easy access to the Sian Kaan Reserve.

2. Tulum Town (AKA Downtown Tulum or Tulum Pueblo)

Colorful shops line the streets in Tulum Town (AKA Tulum Downtown).

Tulum Town is also called Tulum Pueblo, and it’s the downtown area where many Tulum locals live. If you’re doing Tulum budget travel, you’ll want to stay here in downtown.

It has a charm all its own, but this is not the Tulum you’ve seen on Instagram — that’s Tulum Beach.

However, you can stay in Tulum Town to save some money, and spend all your time at the beach as there are plenty of cheap hotels and some of the best Tulum hostels here.

 3. Aldea Zama

aldea zama tulum neighborhoods
While Aldea Zama doesn’t offer many things to do in Tulum, you can rent a nice place there.

The Aldea Zama neighborhood is located between Tulum Town and Tulum Beach.

Besides this a great central location, you’re within walking distance of several restaurants, and there’s newer construction apartment buildings with nice amenities.

When I’m traveling to Tulum, I usually opt to stay here because you can often find great deals for Airbnb Tulum Mexico.

For me, it’s one of the best areas in Tulum — and it now has one of the best all inclusive options.

A new resort built in the past decade, Secrets Tulum is a beautiful place with several restaurants, a spa, gorgeous pool area, and basically all the best things all-inclusive travelers need.

⚠️ Note: This is NOT one of the best Tulum family resorts, as Secrets is adults-only.

4. Tankah Bay & Soliman Bay

These two Tulum bays are located on the north-side of the town. They’re not too far from the hustle and bustle of downtown, but feel like they’re a world away.

Accommodations here often include all-inclusive resorts (like Dreams Tulum) and beachfront villas.

What are the best places to stay near Tulum Mexico?

akumal beach mexico
You can swim with the turtles in Akumal Beach.

🏝️ Akumal Mexico

Famed for Akumal Bay, where you can swim with the turtles, the small town of Akumal is located about 30 minutes north of Tulum by rental car.

🐢 In fact, the word akumal means “place of the turtle” in the Mayan language.

While many of the all-inclusive resorts featured in this article are located in Akumal (or slightly north on Playa Xpu Ha Beach), you can also check out this list of these Best Akumal Resorts for an All-Inclusive Stay if you need even more options.

🏖️ Riviera Maya Mexico

Pretty Playa Xpu-Ha is just one of the best beaches in Riviera Maya.

Wondering, Where is the Riviera Maya exactly?

It starts a few miles south of Cancun in the small beach town of Puerto Morelos, and ends in Tulum. The drive from Puerto Morelos to Tulum takes about 1.5 hours.

The Mayan Riviera is one of the most exclusive areas on Mexico’s Caribbean Coast, and home to many of the best all-inclusive Mexico resorts.

Where do the celebrities stay in Tulum?

Tulum Beach — Celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Paris Hilton and Drew Barrymore have been spotted in Tulum at Habitas Resort, Azulik Tulum, Amansala Resort & Spa, Mezzanine, a Colibri Boutique Hotel and Ahau Tulum.

What is better Cancun or Tulum?

It depends — The Cancun vs Tulum debate has long been raging, but it depends on you and your travel style.

They’re two of the top Mexico travel destinations, but Cancun is structured and well-established, while Tulum is bohemian.

They both offer swimmable cenotes, Caribbean beaches, Mayan ruins and more, so they’re similar in that regard.

However, Tulum attracts a younger crowd who enjoys yoga, açaí bowls and electronic music festivals. Cancun is better suited for families.

What is Tulum Mexico best known for?

Tulum is best known for its pristine beaches with turquoise waters and white sand, ancient Mayan ruins overlooking the Caribbean Sea, a bohemian atmosphere, eco-friendly resorts, and a vibrant culinary scene.

How many days in Tulum do I need?

This will depend on you, of course. However, as a small town, you can see all the best Tulum sites with 3-5 days.

Follow That Dream to Tulum, the perfect place for beautiful beaches and more.

Of course, the more days you have, the more you can see — but even if you spend a week in Tulum, you’d never be bored because there are so many cool sites and Tulum things to do.

What’s the best time to visit Tulum?

Winter is the best time to visit Tulum for nice weather, but December and January can be crowded and expensive.

Prices and crowds usually drop off by February and March, but the weather’s still nice.

Now, because there’s never snow, some would consider Tulum a year-round destination — and it kind of is, but with some caveats (see below).

🌡️ Tulum Weather Chart

tulum mexico weather chart
Note: Tulum average weather temperatures can feel 5-10°F hotter (2-3°C) because of the humidity.

Tulum summers are incredibly hot and humid, and this is also the Atlantic Hurricane Season (which runs June 1-November 30 each year).

Though still spring, April and May tend to be especially brutal, and even local dread these months.

However, these months will have lower price tags as they’re outside of the high tourist season in Tulum (November to March), when prices are inflated, and the beaches are crowded.

Is Tulum expensive?

When comparing Tulum to other beach towns in Mexico, yes, Tulum is on the expensive side.

For an unforgettable experience, there’s no Tulum hotel better than the Azulik Tulum Resort. (Photo: Expedia)

However, Tulum on a budget trips are completely possible by making it a point to save money here and there.

One tip is to stay in Tulum Town (AKA Downtown Tulum) instead of staying on the beach. In fact, eating, drinking and shopping will all cost less in downtown than on Tulum beach, as it’s less touristy.

If you’re a budget traveler, there are many other cheap Mexico beach towns you can visit instead of Tulum.

You have to make safety a priority by staying aware of yourself, your belongings and your surroundings at all times.

While not everyone would rank Tulum among the safest places to travel in Mexico, plenty of statistics show that millions visit each year — and by comparison, the number of incidents of petty crime and violent crime is low.
