The 11 Best Cheap Hotels in Tulum
One of the biggest challenges to writing a guide to the Best Cheap Hotels in Tulum Mexico is that cheap is a relative word. My idea of an affordable Tulum hotel may not be yours (and vice versa).
Also, even Tulum cheap hotel rates can fluctuate A LOT.
I’ve done my best to price things out in the Tulum busy season and Tulum slow seas, and take an average of that before calling something “cheap.”
Of course, this isn’t a science, as no Tulum hotels are cheap every single night of the year. Before booking your hotel, please be mindful of the total price (including taxes and fees).

Area Guide: The Best Neighborhoods in Tulum
What is the safest part of Tulum to stay in?
Both Tulum Pueblo (AKA Downtown Tulum) and Tulum Beach are popular among tourists, and generally considered safe.
However, always check recent travel advisories if you’re unsure.
Whether you are staying in Downtown Tulum or on Tulum Playa (AKA Tulum Beach), safety is pretty much the same across the board.
Of course, you’ll always want to remain aware of yourself, your surroundings and your belongings.
The beach road between restaurants, venues and beachside hotels is always super busy, so travelers shouldn’t experience issues there.
As one of the best Mexico party towns, make sure to always be alert when walking near the roads.
It is best to avoid quiet less-transited roads after dark so that you don’t become a target for crime or extortion.
Consider taking a taxi rather than walking if your hotel is on a less-frequented thoroughfare.
🤔 Tulum Beach vs Tulum Downtown
Both downtown Tulum and Tulum Beach Quintana Roo have their charms. If you are pumped about the nightlife in Tulum, and visiting shops, bars, and restaurants, staying in Tulum Town is your best bet.
If you’re all about sand, sunshine, and the ocean, staying on the beach is the way to go. Of course, if you’re on a budget, Tulum Town offers the best rates compared to the more luxury options on the beach.
📝 Tulum Travel Tips: Check The Yucatan Times and Riviera Maya News for coverage of current Tulum news in English. You’ll get updated info, and maybe even some Tulum safety tips.
ALDEA ZAMA
The Aldea Zama neighborhood is located between Tulum Town and Tulum Beach. Besides this great central location, it’s walkable, there’s plenty of restaurants, and newer construction apartment buildings with nice amenities.
When I visit Tulum, I usually stay here because I think it’s the place to go for cheap places to stay in Tulum that are also really nice.
I’ve also found great deals on Tulum VRBO homes and Tulum Airbnbs in Aldea Zama.
In short: If you’re wondering where to stay in Tulum on a budget? Aldea Zama is it
🤩 Oh, and you’ll also find some of the best cheap eats Tulum has in this area, like my personal favorite, Taquería Honorio. This local’s only taco spot easily has the best tacos in Tulum.
